Trip Overview
Deluxe Makalu base camp trek-22 days
The Deluxe Makalu Base Camp trek is a less visited but very beautiful remote trekking region in mid-eastern Nepal. This 22-day trek leads you toward the base camp of the 5th highest mountain in the world—Mount Makalu(8485m). There is only one domestic airport where you will fly in and out for the Makalu base camp trek. A local tea house and homestay are available on this trek, so a tent trek is not necessary. During the trek, you will explore the flora and fauna of Makalu Barun National Park. There are a few optional high-altitude trekking trails to Kanchenjunga or Everest from the Makalu region.
The Makalu base camp trek is ideal for experienced trekkers who seek nature, hidden cultures, including Rai and Sherpas and their cultures, farmland, rhododendron trees, and many 8000m peaks, including different faces of Mount Everest.
Is this trekking for me? How difficult is the Deluxe Makalu base camp trek?
The Deluxe Makalu Base Camp Trek is a moderate to challenging trek as it leads you up to the base camp of Makalu (5250m). Geographically, it is not very challenging, but previous trekking experience can add more value. However, previous trekking experience is not really needed. So, if you're physically fit and want to trek in a remote hilly region of Nepal, with plenty of ups and downs, this is the trek for you. The tea houses are not facilitated like in other developed trekking regions, but you can enjoy the local homestay and its culture. This is also a less popular trekking area, so you can enjoy fewer crowds and more remote nature.
The best season for the Deluxe Makalu base camp trek:
The best months for this trek are October-November in the autumn season and March-May in the spring season. June and September are early and ending monsoon seasons, so weather can change at anytime. December is a very nice month for this trek in early winter.
