Upper Mustang Trekking - 22 Nights/ 23 Days

Upper mustang trekking, Sometimes known as ‘The Forbidden Kingdom’, upper Mustang trekking conjures up images of barren ochre landscapes and remote other-worldliness.

Upper mustang is a destination cherished in the imaginations of connoisseur trekkers, who prefer to undertake a journey with a difference into the kind of lands which cannot be encountered anywhere else in the world.

Part of Upper Mustang’s allure springs from the fact that it has been open to tourists for less than 20 years and so retains its ‘time capsule’ qualities, with its people living exactly the same lifestyle they have followed for centuries and its buildings looking like pictures from a book of ancient history.

Lying north of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri, Mustang is an extremely arid region, with snow-crested mountains and barren hills reaching deep inside the vast Tibetan plateau. Strong cold winds sweep through its narrow canyons and over its plains and erosion has left its mark in weird and wonderful rock formations.

Upper Mustang TrekkingAmazingly, humans have inhabited this apparently alien environment for centuries, creating their settlements along rivers and creeks, with now inaccessible caves high up in the vertical cliffs, which were primitive dwellings 2000 years ago.

Much later the region came under the influence of the Tibetan Yarlung dynasty and in the fifteenth century the independent kingdom of Lo was founded by Amepal, whose invitation to the famous Buddhist scholar Ngorchen Kunga Zangpo led to a cultural zenith never to be reached again in the following centuries.

It was probably due to its remoteness that even in the times of later conquest Mustang was always given a high degree of autonomy. It was not officially absorbed into Nepal until 1950 and the years after the Chinese invasion of Tibet turned out to be very difficult for Mustang, because large numbers of Tibetan freedom fighters set up camp and attacked nearby Chinese troops, placing Nepal in a precarious situation. In the 1970s the Dalai Lama asked the guerrillas to stop fighting and the Nepalese government arrested and sentenced some of the leaders.

It is probably fair to say now that it is Mustang rather than Tibet which keeps the last remnants of the true Tibetan lifestyle unspoiled by foreign occupation.

By choosing this trek through upper Mustang, you will be sampling a slice of history which may not be preserved for much longer. The sights of spectacularly fluted red cliffs and upper Mustang’s endless expanse of yellow and grey rolling hills will stay in your memory long after you go home, as will your experience of the kingdom’s incredible little towns and the rugged gentility of its people.

We will cross upper Mustang’s lonely landscape via several passes, the highest of which is the Nyi La (3990m), and will camp near villages nestling in green oases until we reach the fabulous walled capital of Lo Manthang, home of the Mustang Raja, where there are also beautiful temples and monasteries.

After a spectacular flight to Jomsom via Pokhara, we begin the trek in Jomsom, the administrative district headquarters of Mustang in the Kali Gandaki valley. After a night Kagbeni, the last city in Lower Mustang, it’s ancient gompa and dusty, winding streets reminiscent of another age, we meet our crew and head north into the area known as Upper Mustang. It is this area, which we explore, discovering the wonders of the architecture, language, culture and traditions. We will make our way up to Lo Manthang along ancient trade routes to Tibet, stopping to camp near the villages of Upper Mustang and having time to mingle with the people of Mustang, and perhaps drink a few cups of infamous Tibetan salt-butter tea, quaff a wooden bowl of local beer (chang) or nibble on some smoke-dried yak meat (yak sha) in their traditional houses. North of Lo Monthang are several villages that require a special permit to visit, and we will spend several days wandering high up in these valleys, visiting these isolated villages.

After getting to know Lo Monthang, we will head east en route to the stunning Damodar Lakes, about four days trek away. Another three days south will bring us back to Muktinath in Lower Mustang just below the Thorong La, with its elaborate temple complex, an interesting synthesis of Buddhism and Hinduism. Finally, we trek back down the windy Kali Gandaki gorge and fly back to Kathmandu from Jomsom.

Upper mustang trekking cover trekking to Dhamodhar lake, a holy lake in upper mustang, a very popular lake in high place of upper mustang. Dhamodhar lake trekking offers great views of Mountain as well as cultures and religions. People believe this lake as a holy pilgrimage lake in mustang.

Mountain Sherpa is the best travel company i’ve travelled with...

“ My friend and I were lucky enough to have two weeks to spend in Nepal in December 2005 and we contacted Pasang Sherpa and asked him to design an itinerary for us for the time we had. He drew up a clear, sensible plan that matched our requirements exactly, and, in addition, handled all our travel requirements from the moment we arrived in Kathmandu until the day we left. Every detail was perfectly planned, with ample allowance for the flight delays that sometimes occur in Nepal. The package included domestic flights and airport pickups, as well as meals and accomodation for the trek, and hotels in Pohkara and Kathmandu. In addition, we were supplied with a friendly, kind and knowledgable guide, Sumba Sherpa, and a wonderful porter, Mr Birbahadur. Between them, they made our 8 days on the trail comfortable and enjoyable.
We had an incredible time in Nepal and will certainly be coming back. Thanks to all of you! ”
