Mustang Trekking - 17 Nights/ 18 Days

Mustang trekking a timeless and breathtaking journey through the Kingdom of Lo in upper mustang region, until recently a hidden Tibetan Buddhist enclave forbidden to foreigners. In mustang trekking, we search for the last nomads of Mustang, living their traditional lifestyle on the border of Tibet, and a forgotten Tibetan Buddhist cave monastery of exquisite murals, dating back to ancient times.

Sculpted canyons with wild rock formations, medieval villages, ruined fortresses, royal palaces and mysterious, ancient cave hermitages, Tibetan Buddhist gompas and soaring snow-peaks characterize this spectacular region, a thumb sticking up into the Tibetan plateau. Mustang region is a Kingdom tucked away amongst the deepest river gorge in the world, the Kali Gandaki River. It is a remote and starkly beautiful region, home to Buddhism as well as the remnants of the older, mystical Bon religion and Tibet's arid high desert bordered by some of the Himalaya's highest snow-peaks. Our trek through hidden Mustang is spectacular from start to finish.

Mustang TrekkingWe continue our yearly exploration of Mustang, first explored by the early, intrepid Himalayan travelers and pilgrims. We journey along some of the least known routes in this sun-drenched region, often following the Kali Gandaki river-bed, other times trekking on spectacular trails high above it, and descending through incredibly sculpted and multi-hued gorges.

Mustang trekking while it is still pristine, intriguing, with a sense of the forbidden. It will soon change!

According to your permit allow, you could trek through the remote eastern valleys along old nomadic trade routes with Tibet, and above Lo Monthang. We also trek along the eastern, winter route from Lo to rarely visited Dhi, Yara and Luri Gompa, as well as stopping in Tetang, the old, fortified salt-mining village.

A Kingdom within a Kingdom, Mustang's wealth was derived from its position on the Kali Gandaki / Thak Khola trade route to Tibet, the region still retains its own King is a fantastic square-walled town. Forbidden to foreigners until 1992 Mustang remains a controlled region which very few people visit, a deliberate policy of cultural and environmental preservation. Mustang region with an average elevation of 13,600ft remains almost entirely Tibetan in character and appearance. A trekking into this fabled Kingdom of Mustang takes us to a kingdom of vast high arid valleys, eroded canyons, stratified rock formations, yak caravans, colorfully-painted mud-brick houses, a barren desert-like appearance and ancient salt-trade routes linked to the high passes of Tibet. Not only beautiful landscape, unique culture but panoramic views of Nilgiri, Annapurna, Dhaulagiri and other soaring peaks, a remote route southeast of Lo Manthang is to explore. A limited number of permits are issued to trekkers each year in order to protect the local Tibetan traditions and the fragile ecosystem. Mustang region is a rugged mysterious arid and haunting wilderness region set amid a lunar landscape of wind eroded hills and cliffs. Trekker's destination is the exotic walled city of Lo Manthang the seat of the King. The Kings Palace is surrounded by maize of gompas and private houses all enshrined within the city boundary walls. Unmolested Mustang is frozen in time it remains one of the ultimate journeys ever likely to be made in one lifetime. Although fierce winds, exposed terrain, high altitude and the rigors of the Tibetan plateau make this region a challenging one, the rewards for venturing deep into the Kingdom of Mustang are immense!

Mountain Sherpa is the best travel company i’ve travelled with...

“ I have been to Nepal 4 times now (and will be going back). Most recently returning April 2006. The last 2 occasions have been with Mountain Sherpa Treks (MST).
Two years ago I went trekking up to Island Peak with Tandi Sherpa, who I found to be a warm, genuine and honest man. A man who I would be proud to call brother. He made me feel welcome and nothing was too much trouble. All arrangements were smooth and efficient.
More recently I trekked for 21 days to both Island Peak and Mera Peak organised by MST and Tandi/Pasang. The price was fair (and I could change my requirements to reduce if needed). Trekking was absolutely incredible a great antidote to hectic western lifestyles. Again arrangements were flawless (even during the strikes) and every eventuality was planned for.”
